What are the ingredients?Present in every bar of Timber Soaps of Galilee are: all natural, organic ingredients. Utmost priority is given to ingredients that are actually grown from Israel soil. Locally produced in Israel are: olive oil, avocado oil, shave grass herb, and Vitamin E oil. Also purified water from the Sea of Galilee, and spring water from the Ari Mikvah in Tzfat, are included. Due to climate, some oils cannot grow in Israel such as coconut oil, shea butter and castor oil. The essential oils, clays and sources of color utilized come from various parts of the world. Other products, specifically our hand-spun/hand-woven cotton cloths are made from organic cotton grown in Israel as well. The properties of all our ingredients, especially the oils, are carefully selected with their unique and healthful qualities in mind.

Does this soap have lye like my grandmother used to make? All soap makes use of lye. It cannot be soap without it. However, soap is actually a product of combining two different molecules: one of oil and one of water, with lye being the catalyst, so that both oil and water are transformed into a completely different third molecule... soap. No lye remains in the completed bar of soap. Grandma's bar of "lye soap" was so named because likely, grandma... or great grandma, likely made her own lye as well from wood ashes (now known as "potash". Because her soap making process began with making lye it became known as Grandma's lye soap. Today, lye is purchased in hardware stores.

Are there chemicals in your soap? Not in the sense of unnatural chemicals. However, everything that has a molecular shape could be technically called a chemical, including water. Lye, is a natural product but it is also called "sodium hydroxide." Lye was originally made by our grandmothers by allowing rain water to soak through a large collection of wood ashes from the stove. The resulting liquid produced was lye. All ingredients in Timber Soaps are natural and basic. It is important to me to provide you with a soap product which is understandable from the ingredient list.

What is the difference between your soap and a soap at the store? What is commercially made is actually not soap. Yes, it will clean your skin. It will also introduce your skin to artificially manufactured ingredients that can often be harmful. Further, in the production of commercial "detergent" the naturally occurring by-product glycerine is removed and sold for other purposes. Hand crafted soaps do not remove this very benefical glycerine which moisturizes the skin - a vital ingredient in REAL soap.
